Everything you
need to know
Answers to the questions developers, planning consultants, and infrastructure teams ask us most often — about BNG, nutrient neutrality, species credits, perpetuity, and how working with Wild Capital actually works.
General
What does Wild Capital do?
We are an environmental mitigation company. We own freehold land, create and register habitat, and sell statutory environmental credits — Biodiversity Net Gain units, Nutrient Neutrality credits, and Species mitigation — to developers who cannot deliver compliance on their own site. We also take on long-term habitat management obligations on land developers retain. We are the second-largest private BNG supplier in England by registered unit volume.
Who are your typical clients?
Residential and commercial developers, housing associations, planning consultants, and major infrastructure operators. We supply government departments (Home Office, MOD), water utilities (Yorkshire Water, Southern Water), and global technology companies, as well as regional housebuilders discharging a single planning condition.
Where in England do you operate?
We have registered habitat banks across six regions — including Hampshire and the South East, Yorkshire and Humber, the East and West Midlands, the South West, the East of England, and the North West. We also create bespoke mitigation along the route of linear infrastructure projects anywhere in the UK. Learn more about our coverage.
Biodiversity Net Gain
What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?
BNG is a statutory requirement, mandatory in England since February 2024, requiring most new developments to deliver a measurable 10% improvement in biodiversity compared to the pre-development baseline. Where this cannot be achieved on-site, developers must purchase off-site biodiversity units from a registered habitat bank — which is what we provide.
How do I know your units are valid for my planning condition?
All our units are registered on Natural England’s statutory BNG register. On allocation you receive a unit allocation certificate, Metric 4.0 output file, a legal conservation covenant, and NE registration confirmation — the complete documentation pack your LPA needs to discharge the condition. We also provide full LPA liaison support.
What is a strategic significance zone (D1/D2/D3)?
Metric 4.0 applies a multiplier based on how far the habitat bank is from your development. Units in the same or a near zone (D1) carry no penalty; more distant zones (D2, D3) reduce the unit value. Our reserves are positioned to cover D1 and D2 zones across high-demand planning authorities, so most developments avoid a significant zone penalty. Send us your site postcode and we will confirm the correct zone the same day.
What habitat types can you supply?
A wide range — including low to very high distinctiveness habitat such as lowland meadow, calcareous grassland, wet grassland, rush pasture, fen and reedbed, scrub mosaic, and Open Mosaic Habitat — plus hedgerow units and in-channel and bankside watercourse units. Availability varies by reserve; see the individual habitat bank pages for current unit tables.
Nutrient Neutrality
What is nutrient neutrality and does it affect my site?
In nutrient-sensitive catchments — including the Solent, Chichester Harbour, Somerset Levels, and the River Wye — Natural England requires that new overnight-accommodation development does not increase nutrient (phosphorus or nitrogen) loading to protected habitat. If your site drains to one of these catchments, you will likely need to demonstrate nutrient neutrality before planning can be granted. We provide certified credits to meet that requirement.
How does the nutrient neutrality process work?
We calculate your development’s phosphorus and nitrogen budget using Natural England’s nutrient calculator, match it to certified credits from our constructed wetland programme, and execute a credit agreement. We handle the Natural England liaison and provide the documentation for your planning discharge. See our Solent Wetlands Reserve for catchment coverage.
Do you charge for the nutrient budget calculation?
No. We provide catchment matching and an indicative nutrient budget calculation free of charge as part of your enquiry. Send us your planning reference and the Natural England objection wording and we will come back within 24 hours.
Species Credits
What species can you provide mitigation for?
We deliver bespoke mitigation for European Protected Species (EPS) and Section 41 priority species — including hazel dormouse, great crested newt, Brent Goose, reptiles, and Barberry Carpet Moth. Our Midlands Grassland Reserve is licensed as a dormouse receptor site, one of very few registered BNG banks able to supply both habitat units and a species translocation programme from a single site.
How long does an EPS licence take?
A European Protected Species mitigation licence application typically takes 4–8 weeks once the supporting ecological evidence is in place. We recommend engaging early — we can run the receptor habitat design and licensing process in parallel with your other consenting workstreams to avoid it sitting on the critical path.
Perpetuity & Security
Why do you say “in perpetuity” when the statutory minimum is 30 years?
The statutory minimum BNG management period is 30 years. We go further: we add a restriction to our conservation covenants protecting every site for nature in perpetuity, beyond the statutory term. There is no cliff edge when the 30 years end — the land remains protected for nature permanently. This is a structural differentiator that matters to institutional buyers and government procurement.
What happens if Wild Capital stops trading?
Your mitigation is protected. The endowment that funds long-term management is funded at the point of sale and held independently by a regulated investment manager — it survives even if Wild Capital ceased trading. Our Defra-certified Responsible Body holds step-in rights: if the scheme fails its ecological objectives or Wild Capital becomes insolvent, the Responsible Body can access the endowment and take control of the site.
Do you own the land, or lease it?
We own the freehold to the land standing behind every obligation. There is no leasehold or landowner-default risk — a structural difference from many providers who lease land or hold it only for the statutory minimum. When you buy mitigation from us, the freehold is already secured.
Who monitors the habitat?
We separate the team that manages the habitat from the team that verifies it. Management and monitoring plans are produced and independently verified by third-party ecologists, with annual condition surveys submitted to the Responsible Body and made available to the LPA. This provides institutional-grade assurance.
Process & Pricing
How quickly can you provide a quote?
We respond to quote enquiries within 24 hours, and offer same-day turnaround on straightforward requests. Share your planning reference, Metric 4.0 output, and the LPA condition wording and we will confirm a firm allocation of registered units — or tell you honestly if we cannot help.
Can I get a quote without a planning reference?
Yes. We can give indicative pricing and unit availability based on a postcode and approximate development size. A firm allocation requires a planning reference, but early engagement helps us ensure the right units are reserved for your scheme.
What documentation do I receive on completion?
A unit allocation certificate, a signed conservation covenant, the Metric 4.0 output file, an HMMP (Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan) summary, and Natural England registration confirmation — everything needed for an LPA planning discharge application.
Do you offer onsite habitat management?
Yes. Where mitigation sits on land you retain, we take on the long-term management obligation — the liability that travels with your consent — for the full agreed period, for a fixed fee, with zero residual liability on your balance sheet. See our Onsite Management page.
Infrastructure & NSIPs
Can you handle every environmental obligation on a major project?
Yes. Most providers supply BNG units alone. We resolve every environmental requirement on your project from a single relationship — BNG, nutrient and water neutrality, protected species, HRA and SANG — one counterparty, one contract, one point of accountability. See our Major Projects page.
How do you keep land costs down on a named major project?
Once a developer’s identity is attached to a land enquiry, land costs can increase up to 10×. We acquire mitigation land before your name inflates the price, using our own capital as a bridge. You benefit from the lower acquisition cost whether you retain the asset or transfer the obligation to us.
What are the three ways to work with you on infrastructure?
1. Secured mitigation supply — fix today’s price for your whole planning journey with a ~3% option premium, flex timing and quantum as your scheme changes. 2. Land acquisition and cost+ — we acquire land anonymously and deliver at cost plus a fixed margin, asset stays on your balance sheet. 3. Onsite management — we take on the long-term obligation for land you retain. Full details here.
